IT has been far too long since I posted on my blog. My bad! The amazing realization I have had lately is that time rushes by with only a mere thought or two that I should have something to share and post on my blog. I question- is my life as interesting to others as it is to me? I am going to spend the next couple of weeks sorting through the events of this last year and bring in to share many of the sunrises and rainbows in my life from 2011.

I find that there are no coincidences in this life for the day this article was published one of Mother Earth's greatest shake ups happened. Our greatest Mother shook and overtook with the sea many lives on half the planet. Japan experienced a historical 8.9mg Earthquake, generating a magnificent and devastating Tsunami hitting her coastlines within thirty minutes after the quake. The wave then raced across the Pacific Ocean effecting many shores along the hundreds of islands, and mainland coast riming the Pacific Ocean with minimal injury and damage.

"Future is Female" was painted in 1998. The inspiration came from a dream I had regarding the importance of women coming together at the ocean edge to pray, teach and regenerate the universe and the greater order of things. in ceremony.

A couple months ago I was contacted by Shelia of Stylish Home
for an interview regarding my shops at Etsy. Her idea has been to interview various artist regionally, and then submit her articles to local media. This sounded like a wonderful opportunity for promoting many circles.; Etsy, Stylish Home and Kauai artist Leslie Hagan and myself.

I sent along a few photo examples of my artwork and the "Future Is Female" was selected for the article. Curious connections at least for me and perhaps some of you reading.

Grassroots art grows on the web was published this week in our local newspaper on Kauai. Unfortunately one part of this circle was broken as Garden Island editing of her article failed to make mention of StylishHome.com. GI also misspelled my main shop ScharArt.

Happy New Year! This year began with a bang of sorts for me as I fell ill with a tenacious Intestinal Bacteria. I had to be rushed to the hospital in an ambulance( first time ever) and spent four days with vital fluid being returned to my body via intravenous.

Doctors and I could not figure out just where I picked up this bacteria but we attributed it to the massive rain and runoff. Somewhere I touched something and hadn't washed my hands before transmitting food to my mouth. I hadn't gone in the ocean due to the brown water advisories so must had been while beachcombing picking up shells.

I am so grateful for the fantastic care that our local small hospital, KVMH provided and the quick response of the doctors.

I see this as a symbol of this year to come for me: take good care of myself and live a healthy lifestyle with gusto!

Indeed there is a pot of golden opportunities at each end of the rainbow!

Kookie and I wish you Happy Holidays

This is the time of year to think of others and share in the joy of the season. I have a Christmas Story that took place for me on the Eve of Christmas, 1958...I was almost 8 years old.

This was a year of great struggle for my parents raising five children. There were not many services available today back then to assist families. My parents were desperately trying to manage with very little. My father had been laid off right before Thanksgiving. We had a hundred pound burlap bag of potatoes that my dad had retrieved from the side of the road. Apparently had fallen off a truck loaded full. We didn't have much else to eat. We ate potatoes in every shape and form for weeks. I remember my folks arguing and showing the stress. They were sad.

On Christmas Eve as my Dad drove past a closed up tree lot with one lone, piddly tree. He climbed the fence and stole the tree. Well there were two police in their car who saw what he had done and followed him home. They didn't press any charges on my Dad. They felt the only crime that had been committed was that this family, with five beautiful children, were without a Christmas tree or presents to go under them. They let us keep the tree. It was one of THE most beautiful trees I remember in my childhood. We decorated it with handmade ornaments and some ornaments from Christmases past.

Early Christmas morning there was a knock at our door, with a loud "HO HO HO".... the two police officers were standing there, in their Santa Hats, with arms full of gifts for all of us. I remember crying big tears of joy while I thought to myself...I will never ever in my life forget the meaning of Christmas!

To this day every Christmas I give a family in need with a little money and presents for the children, in the spirit of the season!

Salt Pond Kitties

There is an overwhelming population of feral cats on this little island in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. How to remedy this situation is beyond my concept at this point. For the last seven years I have been one of the committed feeders of two colonies located at the edges of Salt Pond Park on Kauai.

There is the morning feeder, Dorothy whom has been feeding these kitties for over thirteen years. She willing shares that there are several kitties that are ten years or older...the "originals" she fondly refers to. She has them all named. Dorothy is in her 70's.

Tom and Debbie share the evening feeding with myself. They also are the couple responsible for catching and releasing hundreds of kitties for the last four years. After the kitties have been spayed by our Human Society, who donate the cages and traps to catch them , they then donate Veterinary services for neutering these feral kitties. After caring for them during recovery, Debbie and Tom release them back into the colony.

The population with this colony was working well, as we all managed to keep the colony numbers right around 20 kitties. Then about four months ago, people started dumping not one or two kitties, but LITTERS and pregnant mama kitties.

The colony quickly grew to over 40 kitties with half not neutered. Debbie and Tom worked diligently capturing dozens to have neutered. The ear is clipped as to recognize those ones fixed. They were both warriors of the evening, gathering up as many as four at a time to take to the Human Society for their alteration, and care for them over night and release back to the colony the next day. Mahalo nui loa Tom and Debbie for your LOVE and caring of these kitties!

"Georgie and Tuffy"

A couple of weeks ago this all began to change. An emotional solution was unfolding. The Salt Makers of Hanapepe posted this.

This is what I drove up to for the evening feeding. Kitties in a disarray of confusion. All dishes and containers of water were removed. All shelters and palettes-gone too!

A gathering of folks involved met with the Human Society and it was decided we had to remove the entire colony, stop feeding and capture to bring to the Human Society. Because many of these kitties had been in the colony for several years they were tame. so maybe for some it could mean adoption, but, sadly for most, it means an end to their life.

There is not one solution to this growing problem. Feral cats and feral chickens are a part of this island. People need to be more responsible for their actions with the animals they have and do not want. Dumping an animal is punishable with a $500 fine. IT takes only a minimum of $5 to have your animals spayed at the Human Society.

Spakwus Slulum "Eagle Song Dancers"

"Eagle Song Dancers" are a coastal, canoe culture people from Vancouver, British Columbia. They share their culture with songs and dances, using hand crafted drums. Spakwus Slolem, (translated,"Eagle Song Dancers), are members of the Squamish Nation. Geographically located in what is called the Lower Mainland of British Columbia

Bear, Raven, Wolf, Eagle and Salmon are some of their cedar wood, hand carved animal masks, they dance to tell the stories of the Ancients of their land and culture.

Relay For Life

April is one of THE most important months in my year. The other months are the months each of my sons were birthed. But APRIL is the month, that great challenges and changes seem to occur throughout my life.

It was the month , TEN years ago, that I finally made my life-long-dream move to beautiful Kaua'i. Achieving this move to the heart of the Pacific Ocean changed my location and fulfilled a dream. Moving here increased the nature of my health and my well being, as well became an incredible inspiration for my artwork.

April 1986 was the month and year I had first been diagnosed with cervical cancer. I was only 36 years old and in the midst of a cumbersome divorce from my love of my life!

So every April since my move to this welcoming island I RELAY !

RELAY here on Kaua'i is a celebration of life for 12 consecutive hours. We begin at 6pm and relaying all through the night, until 6am. There are great festivities with music, great local food , education , and support. The Luminaria ceremony is very moving and emotional.

I have been away from posting and blogging as I had a major computer crash and then my computer died. I have since purchased a new system and plan to be back on a regular basis posting new artwork and stories of this island.

I have learned to do my backup faithfully and have been enjoying going back through years of files. Although this does take much time there have been some wonderful moments of re-discovery.

As 2009 comes to a close I find myself, as many might reflecting on this last decade. The most significant change during my personal past decade was after yearning to live in the islands most of my memories (since I was 8 years old). I finally gave away or sold most all possessions and moved to the island of Kauai to live the rest of my life! I had visited early 2000 and completed my move on Easter 2000.

These past ten years I found myself referring to this as my own personal resurrection. Living on this island during the past ten years have taught me the pure aloha nui loa(very much love) and malama pono(take good care) that Kaua'i offers.

This is truly a Paradise in the Heart of the Pacific Ocean! I endured many trials and tribulations regarding my health as well as others well being that are dear to my heart, but felt a community filled with aloha come to comfort and support in times of need and sorrow, comfort and much joy. Mahalo nui loa to all my ohana and friends who are a part of my life.

Kookie came into my life almost three years ago when I rescued him from the Human Society Shelter. He is my best buddy and a good companion. He has learned to walk on a halter and leash so he can go for adventures outside. This morning we went to the beach. He was so curious at that big water but didn't manage to leave the car. Maybe next trip. He also wants you all to know this is a non-alcohol year for him and celebrates only with non-alcoholic bubbly!

It is wonderful to enter into yet another decade. I am very grateful to my Creator! Twenty-Ten marks my SIXTH decade on this earth! January 9th I will celebrate my BIG 60 Birthday! I am very excited to see just where all the lessons will guide me for this next decade to come!

National Tropical Botanical Garden and Women Artists of Kauai Winter Fine Art Festival, Saturday, December 19, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Southshore Visitors Center Meadow

Visit the Gardens during December’s ‘Ohana Day and be treated to a unique display and sale of one of a kind, gallery quality art pieces, reproductions, gift items and ornaments created by some of Kauai’s most talented fine artists. A portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit NTBG.

Feral Kitties of Kaua'i

Feral cats are the 'wild' offspring of domestic cats and are primarily the result of pet owners' abandonment or failure to spay and neuter their animals, allowing them to breed uncontrolled. They are elusive and generally do not trust humans.

On Kaua'i there are thousands of feral cats. They congregate in various bushes and under trees around beach parks, hidden from most people who drive, walk or ride by.

There are many people who bring food and water to many of the colonies around this island. I tend to a colony of about 20-30 cats around the Salt Pond Park. I have been bringing food, water and love for many years. There are about four of us who care for this colony, taking shifts and making sure that these cats are fed, loved, given medical attention when necessary and neutered if needed.

This painting "Makana and Buddie" is one of my most recent watercolors that I dedicate to two of my most favorite kittie buddies. Makana is the golden one and he was around for about five years. He could not be captured to be neutered as he was so fearful of humans. Every now and then he would trust me enough to come in for a petting or a rub. He would get injured and go off to heal. Many times I would not see him for 3-4 weeks at a time and just about the time I thought he had finally gone off to die, Makana would show up, very skinny and hungry.

Makana has been gone now for over two months and this time it would be a miracle if he were to show up again. Makana in Hawaiian means the gift. Indeed he was a gift for me as I learned much about faith and hope because of him.

Buddie is one of the oldest fellas in this colony. He is very friendly and always there at feeding time but seems more interested in getting love from my strokes to his fur and my cooing voice of assurance.

I will be offering small 5" x 7" prints of this painting with all proceeds to go into a fund for these kitties food and care. If interested please leave your contact info in a comment and I will send along an announcement when the prints will be available at my Etsy shop.

Off the Grid ....A Summer Adventure

Summertime is one of my most favorite times on this island of Kaua'i. To spend a day with good friends and taking in the magnificent scenery that most folks never get the opportunity to experience is ono good!

On this day we went to a large ranch that had cattle and horses among a bounty of trees filled with fruit and flowers.
At one point the truck was completely surrounded with cattle. There was this one young bull and a huge adult bull who was as big as the truck.My favorite time was the time I spent with the horses. Mahina and Hoku were as glad to see me as I was to visit with them.

There were so many flowers growing all over and in full bloom. My friend, Frankie at one time took care of all these flowers and fruit trees.

There was this wonderful Kala, Taro patch in the middle of the ranch.

As we were leaving the ranch there was this wonderful scene of one lone cow, two mama mares with their new foals and two Nene geese looking out from the tall grass reminding all of us just how blessed we are to live on Kaua'i!

Reuse and Recycle with Artsy Post-it Notes

A few days ago while cleaning and organizing around the studio I came across photo prints of some older paintings. These were small, like about 2-3 inches squared. I thought up this use for them with the making of these handy little post-it notebooks that will add color and a flair to any work space, office or home.

Handmade with sturdy Acid Free card stock paper and recycled post-it note pads. The art print is printed on Professional photo paper. Comes in a cellophane envelope. These are compact and easy to use and reuse. Just double stick tape down another pack of sticky note when you have used up these. They make a wonderful addition to any gift giving events.

The Other Side of Kong Mountain

"On the Other Side" of the island, from where I live, there is this mountain many refer to as Kong Mountain. It is because, when viewed from the other side, Anahola side, of this view I have painted, the profile of the mountain side resembles that of the great monster Hollywood created, King Kong. The actual name is Kalalea Mountain.

Traveling the road behind Makana it quickly turns into a rough cane road. There is an old Buddhist Cemetery that sits at the base of this ridge. As my friend and I traveled on this backroad to the North side of the island from the west side I was reminded of the incredible beauty and bountiful colors of green.

Much of this landscape I took an artistic license and added the horse and tree line. It is to make of a more interesting landscape of the two things I hold dear to me; horses and the green green mountains of this island of Kaua'i.

Mud Wahine and Other Creatures of Kauai

Traveling to the west on the island of Kaua'i , there is a special place at Salt Pond's Park. Visitors from around the world have discovered the healing properties of this very special salty mud. Early in the morning, at very low tide, you might find that special patch of Grey-green mud or discover your own Mud Wahine of the west.

One of the most popular creatures of Kaua'i are our jungle fowl. They are everywhere you look. They crow whenever they choose and they eat many of the destructive insects that would eventually eat our island away, like termites, cockroaches and most troubling ANTS. There is absolutely no predator for the jungle fowl of Kaua'i. There are no snakes or mongoose on this island either. Most everyone living on the island relish these fowls as we know they benefit our environment.

One of the most endangered ocean mammal of the world lives on our Hawaiian Islands. It is the beautiful Hawaiian Monk Seal. Some estimates are barely 1,000 of them are left. Hawaiian Monk Seals haul out of the ocean to sleep on our beaches. Many beaches will have them roped off with signs and yellow rope in a protected area. If not disturbed they will sleep for 12 hours. It is very important when visiting our island to be most aware while in the ocean as well as walking on the beach. Most times a shinny wet monk seal resembles the boulders and rocks it will haul out to. NEVER approach a Hawaiian Monk Seal on the beach or in the water.

The Nene are magnificent birds and can be found mostly in the mountains of Kokee. These are also protected and should not be disturbed. One of the best places to see them is up at the Kokee Museum early in the morning when they feed in the meadows there.

Another creature common to this island is the horse. On this island many people tether their horses along the side of the road and in fields without fencing. This is a common practice especially on the west side of the island. They are cared for and not neglected, so when you come across one do not be too concerned as they are use to spending their life like this.

This morning is Easter and time for reflection upon the meaning of resurrection. After my morning prayers and welcoming of the sun rising to a new day I went to work. My personal meaning was to resurrect , bring something back into use with some of my creative past. I decided to take to going through some real old diskettes(remember these?) of files. I found some early paintings, sketches and poetry from journals to share."Hot Chocolate Goddess" © Schar 1990

"Hot Chocolate Goddess" I first drew in colored pencils a short time after my Grandmother past away with cancer in 1986. The painting above is oils on canvas.

Grandmother would always have a hot cup of Mexican chocolate for me if every I had a sad look upon my face or was jumping for joy. The last time I saw her she was very ill but had led on to not one person. She was sitting at her place in her kitchen, appearing to be praying over her cup of chocolate, and I saw what I recognized as her vision of her Mother Mary. Grandmothers name was Mary, my Mother Mary as she raised me much of my early years.

"Kosee" is a pen and ink with colored pencil sketch of my greatest dog who owned me once. He was a chocolate Lab and loved the water and watching me paint or draw. He was my most constant companion for over 6 years until I made my move to the island of Kauai.

"Salmon Bear" was painted and given to my youngest son. It is oil on canvas and was a style I painted in for a couple of years in the early 90's. I hold a direct connection with bear as I was given the name "Strong Hearted Bear Woman" early in life. May your Easter bring many blessings of renewal and wonderment!

Painting a Winner

I tend to be the type of painter that feeds on first creating an image in my mind or during dream time. Using real time , real life events and elements. A painting might be born in a title first, or come from a theme for a specific show. The following painting , "Listen to the Orchids Sasha" took work and the concept evolved to solve specific composition challenges.

For this painting, my first ideas came about when I visited my son and daughter-n-law this last Christmas. My grandchildren are grandkitties! Two beautiful "temple" cats, Puppy and his sister Sasha. I told my son that I wanted to paint Sasha for his Birthday painting this year.
This painting quickly evolved into one for the theme of an upcoming show, "Orchid Fantasy", to be held during our town, Hanapepe Orchid Festival, March 27-28, 2009. So I wanted to have orchids in the painting. I was attempting to create a lei (necklace) of orchids. Took the above painting to another artist friend, Marionette, for some critique because I wasn't satisfied with the composition and needed her eye. She mentioned that the orchids around the border were a distraction and I agreed.

Fortunately painting with acrylics is very forgiving. I painted out about half the orchids. I thought of adding a butterfly. I also decided to have Sasha cat-napping with eyes closed, rather then looking out with her intense stare. Make it like she was listening to what the orchids might have to say.

I quickly decided that the butterfly wasn't going to work for this particular painting. So I painted it out too. IT took a few days of looking at the painting and figuring out what I needed to add to balance and complete this painting. I started three other paintings during this time but still had this one to mull over the composition and bring it to completion.

I added some green leaves of orchids to pull the composition into balance. Finally satisfied with the composition through its many evolutions I entered the painting into the show. "Listen to the Orchids Sasha" received an award for the "Orchid Fantasy" show.

It was very thrilling to go up to a stage after having my name and award announced in front of hundreds of people and then to have congratulations hugs from many. But the most memorable moment was when my friend Marionette told me , " you worked hard on that painting and deserved the award". I realized that often as an artist, I forget the process of making a vision evolve and work, and honoring the dedication it then takes to complete a painting rather then stack it away for a later day in storage. I also realized just how important it is to go to a fellow artist, putting ourselves out there and ask for a critique. Tropical Spring!

Tis Spring! Handel is playing in the background and images in twenty-four shades of green dance in my mind. Spring is the season most of the world emerges from the darkened days of Winter. Spring is the reason to come alive and move our life outside. Notice all those things around us that are rejoicing the ret urn of Spring. Move in the light of the sun, run from the rain.

It has been nearly ten years sin c e I first came to the islands to live all year round. I had visited each "season" over 30 years and was o ften told there are only two seasons on the island. The "rainy season "and "trade wind season". As for Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, and having four distinctive times of climate and light change, on the island there are two distinct times. Months of enormous downpours and months with gentle whirling winds that cool from the intense Tropical sun.

As an artist , I have discovered that indeed there are four seasons here as well. Not so definitive, but more subtle and requiring discerned observation. Spring on Kaua'i there are many trees coming into florecent green with new growth and promises. The Monkeypod tree with its constant canopy of shelter for song birds. The Mango filled with yellow blossoms soon to be bursting fruit.

Many birds are singing in a crisper voice and longer songs. The Jungle fowl are quieter because of the rains that rush over with intense downpours. They duck under, huddled down to protect themselves, rather then chime away in there joyful crowing. The Java Sparrows are teaching the young to fly and scour for food. My yard is filled with their constant chattering back and forth as they flock and feed.

The rain adds a magical timbre upon my roof today. A methodical rhythm of water running surfaces, feeding the green, fueling my creativity. May you find your magical timbre of the season and reason to look around and be a part of the beauty that surrounds you!

Take A Walk With Me

Nothing thrills me more than to watch the morning sun appear. Especially when I am at the ocean's edge and my favorite place to take my morning walk.

During my walk this morning it was cloudy but I thought, hey in the world of cyberspace, anything goes and I can create a day of sunshine and rainbows for all to share. So here are some of the places and views I get to experience each and every day while I exercise and breathe in the fresh, clean ocean breeze.

There have been many speculations and tall tales regarding one of our Art History most famous paintings, Mona Lisa , painted by Leonardo da Vinci. Some of the chatter is that it took him almost 17 years before he completed this painting; she is actually a self-portrait of the painted himself; she was his secret lover; and many others have circulated for the hundreds of years Mona Lisa has looked back at us.

After experiencing this incredible showing of one of our GREATEST Masters in history I spent some time with this painting of 'Mona' with a new perspective on the man, the artist, and the most intriguing mind of this person, Leonardo!

As a painter myself most of my life I have been aware of specific theories and principles in applications of perspective and such for painting. Little did I realize that much of today's practices were constructed by the master himself throughout his journals.

Leonardo's fascination of how and why things appear or move led him into proving his theories. He even risked being put to death to "study" human cadavers.

One of his studies was his deep belief that man evolved from bird and man could once again fly!

I was so intrigued with this part of the exhibition for prior to this, I had not realized that Leonardo truly believed , with all his heart, that we human evolved from bird. I knew he was really "the first man to fly", taking years studying and constructing different flying machines. Until visiting and spending time with Leonardo during my visit to the San Jose, Tech Museum and this fantastic exhibition which took a team of 40 artisans, many from Italy, over four months of installation , I had not realized just how much of Leonardo is with us in present day practices, machinery, art and ideals!

This exhibition brings together over 200 artifacts, including drawings, sculptures and life-size models of the art, architectural projects, machines and mechanisms crafted from the original notebooks of the Renaissance artist-engineers. Didactic tools, including multi-media stations with interactive functions, put the machines and achievements of Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance artist-engineers into modern day context. "

In my welcoming in the beginnings of 2009 I went to pay a visit to the incrediable time of the Renaissance. It just so happened that I was visiting with family in the San Jose area for the Holidays. I found that one of the most intriquing person was also visiting, Leonardo da Vinci! I managed an entire day taking in the wonders displayed at the San Jose Tech Museum.

I spent over four hours experiencing the mind and inventions, animated sculptures, paintings, drawings and notebooks of Leonardo DaVinci. To stand before ten of his personal journals, filled with theories , thoughts and sketches of his incredible mind, gave me "chicken skin" up and down my back and arms. I could almost feel his thoughts as I concentrated on the tiny drawings and writings. Leonardo's thoughts on the movement of water or what causes wind to move and birds to fly.

It was written that Leonardo's journals "often appear incoherent and of no logical order". I saw them as a flow of his ingenious mind. How his thoughts could fragment and then take form again in a perfection of order with all that he visioned and designed.

Leonardo da Vinci included comprehensibly art, technology and science, not separate from one another, but as a whole. His imagination and ideas have and continue to inspire generations of scientists, artists and inventors.

A Year Older!

I have returned from a wonderful trip of travel to the mainland visiting family and friends in three states, spending Christmas, New Years and my Birthday! I celebrated my birthday between two states and four days. I am with friends Cj and Susan, Friday morning in Vancouver Washington standing in front of their fireplace.

Upon my return that evening to San Jose, California my son had arranged a birthday celebration at one of my favorite San Jose restaurants, Original Joe's. My cousin really surprised me showing up with her hubby. Julie is currently in chemo treatment for Breast Cancer and hadn't been in a public place in months because of a weakened immune system.

There were many moments of the best of times and memories created with the most important people in my life. I am grateful for another year of hope, healing and love!

Art For Change started the Autumn class season with classes being held at Paradise Painting Studio of Marionette. We had an interesting combination of folks in the class. There were three visitors, a couple John and Sharon from Oklahoma and Donna from Washington,DC. and then four local residents from all corners of the island.

This class got to know one another through a couple of fun and interesting introductions and descriptions of each other. We then gathered up and went on an adventure walking through Waimea town to the beach.

At the beach we teamed up with a partner. One was blindfolded and led around the area blindfolded. Others discovered the swing or items on the beach.

We then walked back to the studio and began our portrait FUN-damentals!! Everyone was pretty excited to get started painting. They carefully chose the colors they wanted to use. And then the blindfolds came out again. They painted completely blindfolded with no time limit.

Etsy Artist @ Kauai Made Trade Show

This past weekend was our FIRST Kauai Made Trade Show at Kukui Grove Center, Lihue, Kauai. Good friends Marrionette and I attended our booths side by side.

Marionette and I both; live on our beautiful island of Kauai, are visual artist, are art instructors, and are proud Etsyshop owners. We met through Etsy, and realized we only lived a few miles from one another, on the same island! We bacame fast friends- finding many aspects in our lives had a common thread of aloha!

Kauai is a tiny island (525 sq. miles), shaped like a human heart, right in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. Plenty , maybe half of our year-round population of about 60,000 were born and raised here. Some of us like Marionette and I, traveled here and didn't leave.

At this rather small gathering of 22 vendors, we found out that two other vendors were also Estians. This makes four fantstic Etsy Shops that were represented at this very small Trade Show of products made entirely on the island of Kauai. Amazing no?

Finding My Past

Don't you just love to go through boxes and storage containers? I do when I finally motivate myself (I'd rather be painting) to tackle the task at hand of filtering through all the stuff I tend to collect. There is so much paper but heya that can be an entire other post, no?

The other day, during one of my seasonal sweeps, I discovered some long lost photos of lil' me. Here I am at the age of eighteen months. This is outside our apartment next to my Grandparents home.

In those days my fathers family occupied the entire block with a community garden centrally located. This was in Santa Clara, California. I returned last month to see if my grandparents home was still standing. Although their home and apartments where remodeled, they were still there. All the garden was gone though and the apartments in the back were gone. The house behind the vehicle in the above photo was still there.

I couldn't believe it when I discovered photos of my best gal pal in the world and my childhood friend, Jeanine. Oh I wished I had found these last month before my visit back home. We had just reunited during our High School Reunion last month. Our friendship spanning over 44 years.

Pueo Dream Transition

I am often amazed at the timing of the Universal order of things. During the days of birthing our new organization Women Artist of Kauai, WAK , Marionette and myself were busy brainstorming and putting up the blog and a website to offer a new budding opportunity for all the creative women artist on Kauai ~ a cosmic thing happened.

As most artist I know, especially the artist I know best - me, selling art has it's ups and downs. I was in one of the lowest, as cash flows, having only $21 to my name. The above painting has been shown in Hanapepe Cafe for the past few months. Up until a couple weeks ago, I was the Day Chef at the Hanapepe Cafe. Due to the great fall in visitors and economics to our island, I was laid off.

The very day Marionette designed and published our logo for this blog and WAK's website, and the birth of WAK, the painting sold! A wonderful cosmic surprize Marionette! Mahalo nui loa!!

This painting, all framed and packed will be heading out to Hudson, New York to her new home. I was told that it was bought for the couples daughter, Luna. While visiting last week on Kauai, they saw this painting and had to have it to give to their daughter. They had had an experience with a Pueo at Salt Pond (where I had experienced my owl). Mom had a dream of the conception of Luna..Luna is coming.... she told me in my dream. Luna is only weeks old, to be birthed in May/June. This is chicken-skin-kine stuff! When the hair on your body stands up on ends. A great transition of life!

Indeed this was one of those Universal dances in sync and rhythm for Marionette, WAK, mom and dad of Luna, Luna and myself!

Kauai artist, Marionette, fell in love with this Garden Island in 1992 and has been painting “Hawaiian Style” ever since. Her works include the techniques of acrylic, silk painting, and watercolor.

New Works in the Making

I just began a new job this week as one of many artist at the Banana Patch Studio. I am learning a completely new medium. Hand screened and painted ceramic tiles. Yesterday was my third day on the job and I completed 36 tiles. The day before I completed 30. I am fascinated with the lengthy process that goes into one tile. After I spend hours on application of the image ,wording and borders they need to dry for 24 hours. Then they are sprayed with a thick glaze that puts a cloudy surface on top of the design. They are then stacked in trays to be placed inside the kiln to slowly fire for 24 hours. After the tiles cool then they are cleaned and checked for blemishes that may have occurred during the firing process. We then apply Masonite backs with a slot for hanging on a nail to the back of the tiles with a super strong adhesive. They are then ready to ship all over the world!

I am really happy to have this wonderful part-time job as an artist. Along with the painting and creating I do in my own private studio plus Banana Patch I am finally a true-to-life-full-time artist! Wild Horse Intertribal Host Drum from Southern California

DRUM~ The Heartbeat of the People

For all the indigenous peoples of the world, the drum is the center of all songs. It is the spirit in the songs granted by the Creator to express one's prayers for strength, completeness, and fulfillment.

We invited three drums this year, the Host Drum, Wild Horse, Intertribal, from Southern California (sings all the ceremonial songs and honoring songs). Guest Drum~Northern, Kree Unit, Chippewa Cree of Rocky Boy, Montana. These boys were only 18-20 years old. Guest Drum ~Southern, Comanche Moon, Intertribal of Arizona. And our only Island Intertribal Drum, 808 showed up,

Kumu Illima Riveria, Hawaiian representative

Kauai Pow Wow combines and honors and represents both the Native Hawaiian, and Native American with ceremonies. A blessing of both cultures opens and closes the sacred circle of the arena. Ilima Riveria was our Host Hawaiian Kumu for this years gathering.

"Creativity resides in us all because we are part of creation itself"

Lesson for sight in discovery of your special creative force:

We all have an ability to create. As children we created without a care in the world. We made up tales, playmates, mud pies and colored inside the lines. As we grew into adolescence, we heard criticism and comments that began to wear and tear on our creative self. Our self-editors began to develop as our peer groups, parents, and teachers attempted to form us. We yearned to fit in. We questioned our visions, our dreams. Many approached adulthood with a deep inner desire to paint, or draw or do something creative, but became conditioned that they were not an "artistic person". Being creative is quite different from artistic.

Most people become too busy or do not make the time to acknowledge their creative selves. Have you ever thought or told yourself..."I am not a creative person...I couldn't draw anything even if my life depended on it"...? "Or I don’t have time to draw, or to paint?"

The creative process can get tarnished and stagnate with our outside world static. The sounds and noise of constant movement like automobiles, planes, trucks, televisions and radios,computers, iPods, cell phones and Blackberries cause distractions of our creative thoughts and feelings. There are forced images constantly flooding our open eyes and ears. All this makes us step backwards and away from our quieted creative place. We can get tangled up as humans doing rather than humans being.

Art For Change is designed for a person to dive into the deepest part of their creative force. You will not be forced but rather surprisingly guided into this pleasant place. Art For Change is a personal principle of instruction I have developed over the last ten years. Exercises are based on deprivation of certain senses; sight, sound, touch, and smell. Classes are offered as workshops in larger groups or on an individual bases.

Participants are led blindfolded to build trust and heighten senses.

There are no requirements as to artistic ability, previous skills, or accomplishments, education or sight. All that is required is trust and faith that each of us holds in that very special place we call our creative self. Believe it is still there - no matter what your age is, what your education , what your job is, or how busy you make your life. Humans create! Food, stories, babies, families, bank accounts, songs, poems, paintings, phone doodles and our self-image is all because we CAN create!

Oh no I had a FATAL computer crash and lost everything on my computer last night. I spent two hours with techs assisting me. Fortunate that my system and computer was still under warrenty! So I am currently uploading and reinstalling everything. Thousands of photographs, poetry and all my favorites with websites are gone. I do have some on CD but have to recreate much of it. There is something to be said for starting over...just don't remember what it is right now. LOL

I have a painting published in the astrological We'Moon 2009 Datebook, Mother Tongue Ink. I have been very fortunate to be an artist selected for the last 10 years consecutively. This is a wonderful opportunity for women artist, photographers and writers throughout the world to get international attention. Every year offers a theme (I enjoy the challenge of a theme) to work with. The selection process (weaving circles) is involved and has many women sorting and deciding on the selections. About one hundred women artist are selected each year and an artist may have more than one piece selected. There are half and full pages,front and back covers that pay, and comp datebooks are given for any art or writing being included in the publication.

We'Moon 2008 Datebook published two paintings, one poem and one photograph of mine. I am published as scharCbear:

Imagine taking a vacation, returning and finding out that the job you had is no longer there. This just happened to me. My son reminded me to "do what I do best and love the most...create beautiful art!"

I have recently opened two shops at Etsy, Aina Kauai Arts http://scharart.etsy.com/ , offers original paintings, ArtMagnets, cards, limited edition prints, and ACEO's.

This shop specializes in unique fine art vessels hand painted with sand, shells, and beach glass from the island of Kaua'i. Each one of these pieces takes at least 10-30 hours to complete and all are created by me. I love to spend hour upon hour gathering the shell and sea glass for these items where the ocean laps at the edge of the shore.
